Pakistan PM Shehbaz Sharif calls for dialogue to resolve issues with India, including Kashmir. He urges peaceful negotiations and international support for regional stability.
Pakistan's Prime Minister, Shehbaz Sharif, has emphasized the importance of dialogue as the sole method to resolve outstanding issues with India, including the Kashmir dispute. Addressing a special session of the Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) Legislative Assembly on "Kashmir Solidarity Day," Sharif reiterated Pakistan's commitment to supporting the Kashmiri people and called upon India to engage in meaningful discussions.
Sharif urged India to reconsider its actions taken on August 5, 2019, referring to the abrogation of Article 370, which revoked the special status of Jammu and Kashmir. He advocated for a peaceful resolution based on the 1999 Lahore Declaration and the relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions, emphasizing the need for a plebiscite to allow Kashmiris to determine their future.
In his speech, Sharif stated, "We want all issues, including Kashmir, to be resolved through talks." He also highlighted that Pakistan's nuclear capabilities are intended solely for defense purposes, not aggression, and called for international support to pressure India into granting Kashmiris their right to self-determination.
The United States has expressed support for direct dialogue between Pakistan and India. A U.S. State Department spokesperson emphasized that engagement through dialogue is crucial for resolving bilateral issues and ensuring regional stability.
Despite these calls for dialogue, relations between India and Pakistan remain strained due to historical conflicts, border disputes, and allegations of cross-border terrorism. The situation in Kashmir continues to be a significant point of contention between the two nuclear-armed neighbors.
